The Difference Between Private Label & White Label

When it comes to choosing packaging options, there are many on offer. White label and private label are terms that can seem confusing to those who are new to this process. You may not understand which direction to go. Have no fear, the Guardpack team are here to help you tell the difference between them both and to help you choose the best one for your business. The two are often used interchangeably but that is not technically correct, so we are here to set the record straight.

What is a white label?

When we talk about white label, we are referring to a formula that has already been pre-manufactured by someone else, but sold by you with your name on it. It is an off-the-shelf formulation that an external company will manufacture that will enable you to do your branding on the packaging. If you are a hairdresser that wants to have your own shampoo that you can then sell to customers to further promote yourself and your brand, white label would be ideal. Essentially, a white label is a blank product with the formula already inside. You cannot change the inside but you can change the outside.

What is a private label?

Private label is when your formula is manufactured by a third-party and packaged by them with your branding on it. If you have a pre-made formula that you wish to put into sachets then private label is the right avenue. Cosmetic companies may approach private label manufacturers as they might not have the ability to mass produce the formula and packaging for their products themselves. Private label is more time consuming, but allows you to have full control over the product that you are putting out.

The benefits of white label

When you manufacture using white label methods you are able to order smaller quantities, making it easier to figure out if the product works for you or not. You also do not have to go through the process of trial and error with a formula as you already know it is effective and meets certain standards. White label also gives you a high degree of control over the packaging. This means you can put your own branding and personality onto the product, even if the formula isn’t entirely unique.

The benefits of private label

Private label gives you an entirely unique product from the formula to the packaging. On top of this, you can always rework and adapt the formula if you need to. This type of manufacturing is better suited for bigger businesses who have already established formulas that are ready to go.
